Today marks the annual, global celebration of supporting environmental protection.

Inspired by the antiwar protests of the 1960s, Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson created Earth Day in 1970 as a “national teach-in on the environment”.  Nelson hoped to bring national attention to environmental issues, such as pollution, clean water, loss of wildlife and sustainability.  Twenty million Americans participated in rallies across the country. By the end of 1970 Congress authorized the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.) and the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts were all passed. Earth Day is now a global celebration with events taking place in more than 193 countries.
