Staff Pick of the Week: Here by Richard McGuire

This week’s staff pick is Here by Richard McGuire. This graphic novel doesn’t follow any specific story or characters, but instead has a simple concept. Each page is a wide shot of the same exact location spanning tens of thousands of years. Within that same page, separate and sometimes intersecting panels show different eras, from 10,000 b.c.e. to 1927 c.e. to 2111 c.e. and so on. The result is an arresting look at the immensity of time and humankind’s place in the world. I highly recommend this book not just to casual and experienced graphic novel fans, but to anyone looking to experience an incredible and accessible change in perspective.

The first meeting of Native Americans and Europeans, a subtly traumatic afternoon in the early
21st-
century, and a look into a very different landscape; the past, the present, and the fore-
boding
future collide in one place.

Thanks for reading!
