One of the best ways to encourage language development in your child is to act out nursery rhymes together. Nursery rhymes not only inspire with catchy rhymes and rhythms, they also introduce new words to your child. Talk about them and include similar words. An example: The Itsy Bitsy (or eency weency) spider climbs up a water spout – or a rain spout – or a down spout. It’s part of the gutter system on a house or building to catch the rain water and keep it from going inside. Take a walk in your neighborhood and look for gutters and rain spouts on the houses.
Act out the rhyme with your fingers, just as Miss Lana does! And, as always, remember that “Play is the work of childhood” and have fun!
