October Book Suggestions: Ghost Stories

‘Tis the season for all things spooky

…so in honor of the upcoming holidays and ever darker nights, I’d like to suggest some ghost stories.  Some are terrifying, some are romantic, and some a little bit funny.  But they all have one thing in common: apparitions, phantoms, poltergeists, and other incorporeal beings.

Okiku is a lonely soul. She has wandered the world for centuries, freeing the spirits of the murdered-dead. But releasing innocent ghosts from their ethereal tethers does not bring Okiku peace.  Such is her existence, until she meets Tark. Evil writhes beneath the moody teen’s skin, trapped by a series of intricate tattoos. Tark needs to be freed from the malevolence that clings to him. There’s just one problem: if the demon dies, so does its host.

Rebecca couldn’t feel more out of place in New Orleans. She’s staying in a creepy house with her aunt, who reads tarot cards. And at the snooty prep school, a pack of filthy-rich girls treat Rebecca like she’s invisible. Only gorgeous, unavailable Anton Grey gives Rebecca the time of day, but she wonders if he’s got a hidden agenda.  Then one night, among the oak trees in Lafayette Cemetery, Rebecca makes a friend. Sweet, mysterious Lisette is eager to show Rebecca the nooks and crannies of New Orleans. There’s just one catch.  Lisette is a ghost.

The Ghost and the Goth by Stacey Kade

After a close encounter with a bus, Alona Dare goes from homecoming queen to Queen of the Dead. She’s stuck as a ghost in the land of the living with no sign of the big, bright light to take her to a better place. To make matters worse, the only person who might be able to help her is Will Killian, a total loser outcast.  More than anything, Will wishes he didn’t have the rare ability to communicate with the dead, especially the former mean girl of Groundsboro High.  Can they get over their mutual distrust — and quasi-attraction — to work together? Readers of this spirited paranormal comedy won’t want this odd couple to ever part.
