Genre Picks: July 10, 2012

Two of this week’s picks might not be available by the time this article is published but rest assured they will on the way as soon as possible. There were quite a few excellent titles hitting the shelves this week and I was somewhat surprised that I had to prune DC Comic’s Batman: Earth One from my list to make room for some other titles. This weeks picks include a new mystery series featuring an original new detective, a literary fantasy from a master, and a cop procedural set amidst the doom of an oncoming asteroid.

Harry Lipkin, Private Eye
Harry Lipkin, Private Eye

Much like last month’s Don’t Ever Get Old, Barry Fantoni’s Harry Lipkin, Private Eye features a detective perhaps a bit past his prime. The tough talking titular character is 87 years old and his cases may not be as high profile as they once were but Harry Lipkin is still the man to get the job done. Off beat and a willing to play with the trope of the detective genre Harry Lipkin, Private Eye is looks set to really make a splash.

The Prisoner of Heaven by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
The Prisoner of Heaven by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

Carlos Ruiz Zafon’s Shadow of the Wind is one of the best books I have ever read and is one that every book lover (and lovers of greater stories) need to read at least once. Much to my shame I’ve yet to give The Angel’s Game a try yet but word is that Zafon’s newest novel looks to tie both previous books together. Do yourself a favor and journey once more into the Cemetery of Forgotten Books.

The Last Policeman by Ben Winters
The Last Policeman by Ben Winters

Ben Winters’ new novel is a mystery set beneath the shadow of a hurtling asteroid set to destroy earth in six months. The first in a trilogy The Last Policeman provides an engaging mystery with a unique backdrop that broadens the novel scope to question the cornerstones of society and life itself. Selected as a best Book of the Month by Amazon and with glowing reviews from Kirkus and Wired, The Last Policeman looks to be an exciting start to a new series.
