Arthur Machen’s 1890 novella The Great God Pan was panned by critics upon its initial release but as the twentieth century rolled in has been praised by horror writers in including H. P. Lovecraft and Stephen King who went so far as referring to the novel as “one of the best horror stories ever written” and the primary influence for his own story N.

Machen remains one of the most influential authors in horror literature and his popularity in the 1920s directly influenced many of the top contributers to seminary Weird Tales pulp magazine including Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E. Howard, and the aforementioned H. P. Lovecraft. His influence further extended into the twentieth century and his works went on to inspire modern horror masters Stephen King, Peter Straub, and Ramsey Campbell in addition to well-regarded fantasy authors Tim Lebbon and Graham Joyce
