Women’s History Month

Observed annually in March, Women’s History Month began in 1978 when it was celebrated as “Women’s History Week” by the Sonoma County school district. In 1981, as more communities, schools and organizations joined the honoring of women, Congress asked the President to declare the week beginning March 7th as National Women’s History Week. Now a month long celebration, it highlights the contributions of women to history, culture and society.
