Reclaiming Our Voice: New Jersey’s Central Role in the Fight for Woman Suffrage – Monday, 1/6 at 7pm.

Carol Simon Levin will portray Lillian Feickert, president of the NJ Woman Suffrage Association from 1912-1920, to explore the overlooked role of New Jersey in the long frustrating fight for women’s suffrage. Many do not realize that some NJ women once had the right to vote and then lost it for over a century or that nationally-known suffrage advocates Lucy Stone and Elizabeth Cady Stanton staged tax and voting protests in the state. She also describes how Alice Paul became the dynamo who re-energized the push for a federal amendment and how Dr. Florence Spearing Randolph brought black women into the movement. Participants will learn that women were not ‘given” the vote, but fought for it for generations. More information about Carol and her program can be found at tellingherstories.com. Q&A will follow. Refreshments will be served in celebration of the 2nd anniversary of the Greater New Brunswick Area League of Women Voters.

This program is co-sponsored by the Middlesex-Somerset Chapter of the National Organization for Women and the Greater New Brunswick Area League of Women Voters to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment and women’s constitutional right to vote. Please click here to register.
