Vacation Creations: Enchanted Birds!

Birds are featured in a number of fairy tales from many cultures: There is the Russian Firebird, the mythical Phoenix, and the Goose that lays golden eggs. There is a Golden Bird and a Blue Bird, and there are many crows.

Let your imagination fly high when you make these Enchanted Birds! Make several in different sizes and then make up your own stories about them. Does the bird wish it had feathers of pure gold? Is it really an enchanted prince or princess – or a frog? Where does it fly when it travels far away?

What you need:
Paper – assorted sizes and colors and weights
Crayons or markers
Gluestick
Scissors

What you do:

  • Trace round things on the assorted papers – a drinking glass, a soup can, a cookie tin, a dinner plate – make several in different sizes.
  • Cut out the traced circles and fold them in half. This is your “bird.”
  • Cut thin strips of paper for tail feathers and glue them to one end of the bird.
  • Cut small fan shapes and snip a fringe with scissors for wings. Glue onto the bird.
  • Cut small circles for eyes and add the centers with markers or crayons then glue onto the opposite end of the tail feathers to make the bird’s head.
  • Cut a diamond shape and fold it for a beak. Glue it near the eyes.
  • Set your finished birds on a table and gently tap them to make them rock! Give your birds fancy names – or crazy ones!

Tip: Whether the paper is thin or thick, use the same type of paper for the feathers as you did for the bird’s body.
