Author Talk: The Franklin Park Tragedy by Brian Armstrong – Monday, 9/23 at 7pm.

The Franklin Park Tragedy (The History Press August 19, 2019) by Brian Armstrong tells the story of how on March 1, 1894, two African American men broke into a home in rural Franklin Park and murdered a white woman and her daughter before her husband fought and killed the attackers. The newspapers called it the ‘Franklin Park Tragedy,’ and the story attracted public attention nationally and abroad. Another tragedy came afterward, with the racist forced expulsion of many local African American residents. Author Brian Armstrong tells the shocking story of this ‘sundown town’ and how it evolved into today’s diverse community.

Author Brian Armstrong will give a talk (with Q&A) on the subject of his book. A book signing will conclude the event. Books will be available for sale for $20 (cash only).

Brian Armstrong is a historian, researcher, and author. Native to New Jersey, Armstrong is now a resident of Mount Laurel, NJ. He received a bachelor’s degree in history and political science from American University. He was the president of the South River Historical and Preservation Society for ten years and is now the vice president of the League of Historical Societies (Central Region). He is co-author of South River (Arcadia Publishing 2015). Armstrong lectures throughout the state of New Jersey on local history and other topics.

Basic English Conversation Group (LVSC) – Tuesday, 9/24 at 1pm *Held in the Community Room*

This free Basic English as a Second Language conversation group is led by a trained Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County volunteer tutor. The group is offered to ESL learners who have a basic, working knowledge of English. The group is not appropriate for people who cannot speak basic English.
Conversation groups provide ESL learners with a safe, comfortable environment to gain confidence and experience speaking English with other ESL learners. A conversation group is the perfect complement to an ESL class or working with a literacy tutor. Different topics are explored each week and tutors provide information and fun activities that help people learn more about American customs while improving their English literacy skills.
The group meets every Tuesday at the same time for 10 weeks from September 10th through November 12th. Registration is not required and drop-ins are welcome! For more information, please call 908.725.5430 or send an email to info@literacysomerset.org.
*NOTE: This conversation group is held in the Community Room, not the Historical Room where the Intermediate Group (which requires registration) is held.*

Zumba Gold Chair + Pilates – Wednesday, 9/25 at 2pm.

Join instructor Laura Fechter for this fun combo exercise class in a chair! Zumba incorporates easy-to-follow Zumba choreography that focuses on range of motion and coordination.  Zumba Gold Chair is perfect for active older adults who are looking for a modified Zumba class that recreates the original moves at a lower intensity. Chair Pilates is a mind-body class based on Pilates principles, using the chair for support and balance as well as various fun props, and incorporating breathing, stretching and strengthening for the whole body!

Manhattan Short Film Festival – Friday, 9/27 at 2pm. 

Join film lovers from around the world as we show the finalist films in the MANHATTAN SHORT Film Festival, now in its 22nd year.  The festival will screen the 10 best short films submitted from around the world.

The Library will hold three screenings, on September 27 at 2 pm, Thursday, October 3 at 6 pm and after-hours on Friday, October 4 at 6 pm.  Attendees will view the films before voting for the best film and best actor at the conclusion of the program. Please note that some or all of the films may contain adult content and language not suitable for children. Registration is required. Please click here to register.
