Art Class: Make a Torn Newspaper Dog

  • Have you read 101 Dalmatians by Dodie Smith? Or perhaps you’ve seen one of the movie versions like the 1961 animated classic produced by Disney? Extend the story by making your own dalmatian art!

What you need:

  • Old newspaper (if there isn’t any old newspaper at your house, ask your parents to help you find something else with printed words that you can tear up – old flyers, outdated phone book, computer printouts, magazines, sales ads, or junk mail)
  • Paper (any kind) or canvas to use as a base for your art
  • Black paper or any paper colored with black crayons or markers
  • White paper scrap
  • Glue stick
  • Optional: paint and/or crayons and pencil with eraser tip or cotton swab

What you do:

  • Take a piece of newspaper and tear it into the shape of a dog’s head.
  • Tear another piece of newspaper to look like the dog’s body.
    • Tip: Is your dog sitting or standing? Each position would be a different shape. If your dog is standing, you can add the legs separately or include them with the dog’s body.
  • Glue the dog pieces onto the background paper.
  • Tear the black paper into shapes for the ears, nose, and spots and then glue them onto the dog.
  • Tear the white paper scrap into two shapes for the eyes.
  • Glue a bit of black paper on top of each eye and then glue the eyes onto the dog.

Optional: Decorate the background paper with colorful spots of paint applied with a pencil eraser or cotton swab, or make spots of color with crayons.

Plan a Dalmatian movie night! Serve black, white, and round snacks (like Oreo cookies) and watch together as a family. Then check out the book by Dodie Smith and plan a family read-aloud night to compare the book with the movie.
