Watch Stories Online and Make a Puppet Show!

When you can’t get to the library, let the stories come to you! The SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s award-winning children’s literacy website, Storyline Online, streams videos featuring celebrated actors reading children’s books alongside creatively produced illustrations. Click below to check it out:

Why not watch one of these together and then create a puppet show based on the book?

I watched one of my favorites, Harry the Dirty Dog, written and illustrated by Gene Zion and read by the fabulous Betty White, and then made my own puppet based on the book cover. All you need is a pencil, some stiff paper, scissors, a craft stick or straw or cardboard strip (remember the cereal box we flattened in the blog yesterday? Perfect for this!). Draw your dog, cut it out, and tape it to the stick or straw or strip. You can see my paper puppet of Harry underneath the video below.

Who else should be in the show? You can draw Harry’s family or you can draw your own family and make Harry your dog! What if the family’s cat did the same thing? How would that change the story? And how else might Harry (or the cat) get dirty?

Present the puppet show for the whole family. Set up a box or any object on a table and cover it with a cloth, and let your puppets pop up and down from behind during the show.
